Hi all,
We are about 50 Ks out of Cobar and are hoping to reach Dubbo tomorrow ,I just would like to know if there is any safe free camping near the zoo or around Dubbo,a fellow I met In Alice said he stayed at a Vinyard not far from the zoo and the owner locks you in at night which is fine with me as the kids and us will just sleep till morning anyway LOL! but Im happy to stay anywhere thats safe and cheap as we have blown the budget and this will be the last stop before we finally reach home, Darn its hard to type whilst the Mrs is driving,I hope to hear from some of you guys soon CHEERS :)

Roadside camp up at Brocklehurst rest area (8kms to the nth of Dubbo). I have stayed there many times and apart from the odd truck pulling in to share the large rest area I have had no problems. You can get right over the back to keep well away from everyone if you want to as well.

Cheers, Trevor.

Johnny Boy,

There is a reserve on the opposite side of the entrance to the Zoo (not sure if the entrance to the reserve is before or after) This reserve is locked off at night, but I am not sure you are allowed to stay or not.

There is a winery (Red Earth Estate) on Camp Rd and it may be the one you have heard of, but once again, not sure if you can stay there or not.

Cheers,

Cruiser

Hi John,

Approx 15-20kms west of Dubbo is a large reserve right on the river. Its just Dubbo side of the Rawsonville bridge.

Hi John

We stayed at Terramungamine free camp, fourteen kilometres from Dubbo on the north side. Quite safe to leave the caravan or camper while visiting the zoo; we did as did lots of others, and usually some of the campers are around during the day.Check out threads 80794 and 80383. It may not have been a big cost saving to drive that distance each day but it was lovely and quiet as well as safe. I haven't heard about the vineyard.

Enjoy the zoo; one ticket covers two days and you need that to get around and have a decent look. Make sure you get to some of the animal feeding times where the keepers give a talk. Wonderful for the children too. Get there early, as many of the animals go to ground during the heat of the day. You can drive around in your own car. Take your own lunch and drinks if wanting to cut costs.

Hi John,

I second what Motherhen has said, we too camped at Terramungamine, nice spot by the river with flushable loo's (cleaned weekly). As Motherhen has said - take the car, we didn't and we were VERY tired at the end of the day......

Great day though, the kids loved it and yep pack a lunch heaps cheaper.

Cheers
Caz

If you go to the zoo take the early morning walk before it opens to the general public

It is well worth the extra !!

I believe there's one located right on the Macquarie, only 2-3 kms north of the town. Right about here: -32.227814,148.606803.

I believe this is a free camp site however I don't the Camps Book on me now to check.

Cheers.
